Way Off Topic Box / The Auto-Necroing Thread Game: Mk. III
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:42:39 AM »
The person that has a post in this thread that occurred the greatest amount of time after the post immediately preceding it is the current winner.

DISCLAIMER: This game doesn't actually encourage necro. In fact, it discourages necro, as it encourages the current winner to post consistently and frequently so that others cannot post with a larger gap. Of course the winner who post after the thread's been dead for 13 days wins by default, because that's the max gap before rules are broken, but hell it won't get that close.

Good luck!

Solved Ban Appeals / Re: Possible RDM+Leave Ban

I remember killing Tendovvi!

It was in that little drop-hole that leads to the orange teleporter. Tendovvi was standing behind the little water-puddle, where someone might wait to kill an innocent passing by.

I turn around to see if anyone's there, and Tendovvi was, hopping around to the other side. I spin around, and see he is still there, and lo and behold-- there is an unidentified corpse hanging from the ceiling just above him. I have no idea whether Tendovvi did or didn't see it, because he wasn't firing at me immediately, but I definitely sprayed him ded and IDed the body, both innocent.

Who were you banned by: UnknownError and Tendovvi
Why were you banned: RDM and Leave.

What server where you banned from: TTT

What date and/or time around were you banned: May 3rd, roughly a couple hours before this post.

Steam ID: STEAM_0:1:25689951

Your in game name: Amanita phalloides

Link to your steam page: http://steamcommunity.com/id/AmanitaPhalloides/

Additional comments:

The reason that I suspect that this is RDM and Leave is because, prior to leaving, I remember having killed two innocents. (My reasoning is a bit blurry, for I played quite a few rounds, and I don't want to mix them up and confuse folks.) However, I can attest that both kills were deserved/accidental, and not in malice.

Upon dying, during this round, I decided I was ready to leave. I did wait a minute in deadchat to see if anyone was yelling at me for killing them, and considering I didn't see anything, I figured nobody was mad. Maybe waiting it out would've been better, but I'm lazy. One of these two persons probably told an admin I RDMed them and left, which is not the case, for my killing them was not random.

(I'm going to try to guess about one of the killings, but this may have been a different round, and entirely irrelevant: I recall witnessing an innocent shoot the traitor-tester on 67th_way, and upon staring at him in the vent and asking over voice-chat whether that's traitorous... I killed him with a Mac-10! This is a thing that happened, but may not pertain to my ban, like I said, it's blurry. Not sure about the other death~)

TL;DR: Another ban appeal where the bannee doesn't know the details. Sorry~

Debate Forum / Re: New Name Needed... PLEASE READ
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:17:07 PM »
I don't think we should even allude to the past with our new name. Start new bros.
This, I feel like this is more important than anything.

If I remember correctly, Conjoint Gaming's name was created in reference to its formation, after several communities came together (hence 'conjoint'). Coming into CG after this occurrence, this allusion to CG's formation never meant a thing to me. I'd rather see the 'conjoint' refer to the gathering of all of CG's players coming together, rather than several communities most players will know nothing about, but that can't be helped.

It's almost got a sense of elitism about it, flaunting a particular occurrence in the community's history of which long-time players can say "I was there for that." I understand that the length of time one's spent in the community means a lot to some people, as a sense of loyalty, but it really shouldn't, and your respect for a player should never derive from this. It should be a matter character, maturity, and a variety of other characteristics. Not a number.

Besides, creating a name to highlight a rough-patch in the life of the community is just wrong. Sure, you can look back and say "This is what made us what we are today", but then comes offense to those who chose to part with the community, or those who were involved in the occurrence, otherwise.

Let's make CG about the present, and always the present, not just what is 'present' to us now. Let new players feel welcome and unintimidated, instead of feeling like they aren't part of this special group who happened to have been in the old community before ________ came to be.

TLDR: Quit trying to make CG about the past, its elitist and not in respect to those who will come to join later. Let's have no 'rebirth, reborn, divorce, resurrection, resurrection, etc.' Just nothing that alludes to our past, please.

Also, SOVEREIGN SQUIDS.

General Gaming Talk / Re: Arma 2 DayZ

Just remember Finnie, crawling around prone can be very effective when it comes to sneaking past zombies. You'd be surprised how close you can get, not that you should. You can also use Q and E to roll in either direction, when prone. Running crouched is good too when you're traveling near-ish towns, as running upright is sure to aggro tons. Don't underestimate walking either. Just watch the eye and ear icons, they show how much noise you're putting out, and how easy it is to see you. Stay on grasses too, as they make you harder to see than on pavement.

When running from a zombie, try to make sharp turns and move through trees and around buildings. Zombies often get confused and stop to look around. You can always try doing this and then diving to the ground, then laying there prone in the grass. You should have 0 bars in sight and sound.

EDIT:
This is also pretty good for getting an idea of where to scavenge, it talks about some buildings in Elektro. Of course this route is always risky, and better if you have more people, but it's good to be able to identify some of the buildings like the fire station and hospital.

It happens after patches fairly often, when most of the servers aren't updated to the latest version.

There becomes a ton of servers that fill up so quickly the launcher's player count can't keep up, or at least that's what I observed when I first tried to play.

There's also a variety of other issues that sometimes come up, like freezing on the Wait for Host, or getting kicked (sent back to the menu screen) without warning.

So, this is pretty much inspired by Day Z, and it looks pretty promising in my opinion. It's a little sad, considering Day Z hasn't even made it out of Alpha, and if this is successful it's likely to kill Day Z in its youth. Still, building the game up standalone will have a lot of benefits. Thoughts?

I'm not trolling anybody here, Inject.

And yes, you have to be registered on the forum to see the Ventrillo section and IP. It's hidden to guests.

I removed everything else in this post because I didn't see the part where it excludes the breaking of major cg rules
That was referring to how the rule specifies the rules we can record for breaking, and then other "major" rules. Major is bound to be interpreted differently by different people, and this is essentially saying you cannot report vent conversations for the breaking of rules deemed minor by the administration. While rules have different punishment standards, I do not agree that that only some should be upheld before others. Players should be allowed to record conversations to use in the reporting of all rules that are broken, in my opinion.

At this point I'm simply discontent in the fact that the "major" specification is a gray-area, making it more difficult for users to know when they can and cannot record, as well as how it seems to take priority over other rules. It's a rule telling us we can only take measures to report the breakage of certain other rules. By the nature of ventrillo, there is literally no other way to efficiently collect evidence of a broken rule than to record it.

In addition, I disagree with telling people...
It's not up for discussion.
When a rule comes up without visible prior discussion, of course players are going to inquire of it. While I realize you/Wholegrain/Cadaver do not want to budge on the rule, which I respect, the community should still be allowed to discuss the grounds of the rule as well as clarifications. You do not personally have to take part in the discussion, if you'd prefer not to. However, if you'd literally like to cease the discussion, then this will be my final post on this thread.

Okay, I won't go into further detail then knowing you haven't had a full chance to read it, but...

What about this:

Perhaps allow users to record vent conversations as they happen, and then later request permission to do anything with it from the players who were part of the conversation? That way the recorded conversation could still be used for reporting issues, and if it were recorded for a community video, the recorder could look at the users involved and PM them asking if they're okay with the conversation being released.

I'm curious, what is the reason for this? Recording people is rude? How is it any different from taking screenshots of things people post on the forum? Those can be modified/used the exact same way. There is a reason forum moderators make it a point not to delete threads. The ventrillo server is just as public as the forum, it doesn't need to be private. If you want to have private discussions with people you can take it to a steam call, you're making it sound like our ventrillo is supposed to be some kind of haven to talk about what we can't on the forum, without a trace. I can understand this rule being effective towards password protected channels, for admin discussions, however.

This is only encouraging players to turn to Vent to talk about what they shouldn't, and you'll be discouraging earnest players from doing anything about it. Honestly, after reading the rule and this thread I wouldn't want to do anything with a recording in fear of getting banned. Even specifying that the broken rule must be "major" is excessive, as players should have the right to report someone for breaking any rule. This rule is also entirely ineffective for recording someone who has/is breaking a rule; asking everyone in the channel will shift the demeanor of the discussion, people will stop breaking the rule or simply deny you to do that. Even if you chose to record it at your own discretion, you'd still be punished for reporting the misconduct simply because you didn't have their permission to record them. You'd be punishing the players who are doing the right thing. And what about silly conversations that go to youtube? They're funny and great advertising for the community, and very good to look back on. It isn't the same when everyone's agreed and knows they're being recorded. Like this.

Instead, if the issue is players unknowingly being recorded, invading their privacy, you could place a disclaimer in the vent popup that warns users they could be recorded at any time, unless they're in a private (password-protected) channel. That way you can't say people's privacy is being invaded without warning, and players will also feel the need to treat others with the same amount of respect as the rules dictate on the forum.

I am not in direct opposition of the rule, I understand the reasoning behind it, but I feel this would be taking away from one of the best communicatory devices of the community, next to the forums.

if someone walks me throught he install ill play
Just get Six Updater/Six Launcher. Run Six Launcher and hit the Day Z install button. After that, double check you have BattleEye in both your Arma 2 folder and your ARMA OA folder. You might also want to specify your game paths in the options of Six Launcher too... But once you've done that stuff, assuming it went well, you can play the game.

(You'll experience issues if you have multiple gzip.exes in your system, so if you get errors during the installation with Six Launcher that might be one thing to look at. It happened to me, as Github has a gzip.exe that was messing it up.)
