You think conflict doesn't promote progress?

It can but if everyone was always at eachothers necks progress would cease and more problems would follow. Being nice in general can establish postive relationships.

The only alternative to conflict, or being at each other's necks, is being nice?

There is other ways I believe. A neutral atleast or you can fake the niceness for the sake of other things.

So why be nice instead of neutral?

it "may" make someone look like a better person. A nice one atleast. Neutrality isn't bad but some people don't get the concept.

Why is it important to look like a better person when you really aren't?

What's so important about respect or trust?

Also, I mean ethical justification, not practical justification.

Respect and trust gets you further, as far as corporate business goes.
Ethical...?

Being nice to people is simply a privilege. There's no way to justify it, other than for personal gain or out of ones own mind.

And from a religious standpoint some people believe that they really are being better people so that they can please god.
