Title: Cannot start certain Valve games in fullscreen
Post by: AlphaWeeaboo on October 21, 2010, 04:04:25 PM
Okay, so when I try to run some games in fullscreen they never load up. It loads and then goes to a black screen where I can only see my mouse. It appears this only happens on games running on the Orange Box engine. Team Fortess 2 and Garry's Mod are the two main games that do it. Counter Strike and Half-Life 2 (DM) however don't have this problem.

Any fixes on this? I have atleast run TF2 in fullscreen once when i first got it.

same thing happened to me a while back. This is right from my support ticket:

"This issue might be caused by corruption in your extracted game files.

Please note: The following process will erase any custom mods and saved games you may have. It is strongly recommended that you copy your game files to another location to back them up before proceeding.

To force the download of new game files:

- Exit Steam then go into SteamApps\[account name]\ and delete the folder for this game.
- Restart Steam and follow the link below to validate your cache files:

Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF)

- Try launching the game

and that didn't work for me, so I messaged back. Next reply which fixed it;

"Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The Steamapps folder and Steam.exe (If 'exe' is not visible, look for the black and white Steam icon)

Restart your computer.

Then, you will need to launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games."

Shit, so would that affect all games or one? I don't mind my Garry's Mod losing it's stuff since I rarely use it other than for TTT. TF2 I have some custom skins/models I would like to keep though.
This process sounds like it would take long to get back into order though. And is the fix permanent, or is it temp? I have reinstalled TF2 once and it worked fine for about a day then went back into the same problem.

your taking your addon stuff and duping it so when its all fixed you can put it back.

you should do this
1. Window the game, put it in max resolution for your monitor
2. Stop the game
3. Go into luanch properties
4. type "-noborder"
5. Restart the game and you have fullscreen with the advantages of windowed!
