Title: Anti-Virus Programs
Post by: AlphaWeeaboo on August 11, 2010, 10:40:37 PM
Seeing as recently anti-virus programs have become mentioned alot I decided to raise this up.
Which program is the best for removing a virus and for protection?

Personally I would say Avira, It's easy and can detect just about any virus. Best of all it's free.

Well in my experience AVG Generally sucks balls. I Worked at a PC shop for a while and if you know malware you know that no anti virus can ever entirely protect you.

I find pretty much any Free Anti Virus, preferably Avast, Avira, w/e aren't to bad. HOWEVER for true Protection I HIGHLY recommend the BEST Malware Protection ever. And I'm not just hyping this up. It is seriously one of the best Malware Protection's around. And Honestly I've yet to see any thing come close to comparing to its awesome power.

MalwareBytes
It's not really an Anti Virus But scans for Malware Better then (not going to lie) pretty much any Anti Virus.

Also if you pay for Anti Virus software you're an idiot sorry. Norton sucks.

NOW I am a Malwarebytes Affiliate BUT ONLY because I love there product I wouldn't Affiliate with something I didn't believe in.

So if you'd like to buy the PAID Version of Malwarebytes:
https://store.malwarebytes.org/342/?affiliate=2169&cart=29945&scope=cart (https://store.malwarebytes.org/342/?affiliate=2169&cart=29945&scope=cart)

Also the free version will Scan and FIND ALL MALWARE but the paid version just gives you active protection and IP blocking.

Heres my write Up:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Full Version For Only $25 Dollars!

CNET Editor's review of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware :
Quote
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning including networked drives, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update.

Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss

Hope that settles the Anti Virus war for you :P

AVG is bad.  It works ok, but it used a FUCKTON of CPU and RAM to run, and it just sucks the performance out of anything you are doing.  I had a laptop that had it and I could barely run programs AVG used so much resources.

I assume your talking about the NEW AVG... I never found the old one to be slow... just simply terrible thats all. But none the less just another reason to ignore it nice to know its a system hog like Norton now... :)

Oh gawd, norton. Didn't that basically GIVE you a virus?

norton was useable.  it is a waste of money but it was useable.  i had it cause i had a paid subscription for it, but once it started breaking down (failupdates, services randomly not working) i ditched it asap.

I don't have any anti-virus programs. I download torrents from a trusted site, and can spot a virus file before I download it on limewire.

(I download like 2 things on limewire a month, I know it sucks though.)

If I ever get one I know the steps to remove it, so I just don't worry about it.

I second what Inject said. MalewareBytes saved my computer a lot of times. I found Ad-aware to be a decent free scanner for minor issues. As far as protection. I'd say Avast as well.

Ok,

I use a combination of programs to ensure saftey on my PC

1.Malware Bytes - yes but only as a routine cleaner

2.CCleaner - To clear out all the temp shit, and I like the REG fixer on it.

3.SpyBot S&D - Great to get rid of all those cookie trackers and adware sometimes.

4.Spyware Blaster (Occasional) - But still installed as reinforcement.

5.Spyware Terminator (Occasional) - But still installed as reinforcement. Seems clunky but fast.

6. Security Task Manager (Occasional) - But still installed as reinforcement. Used to view running processes and threat level. (Though one could easily do that with the process window and a brain. So it's hardly used but there.

7.Adblock for my firefox browser ever since my chrome got wrecked and fails to properly work.

8. Kaspersky - 30 trial that has full features that I just renew ever month. Best virus program I have found yet.
I do have to say it takes a combination of good programs to maintain a computer that downloads/browses and torrents normally.

I want to say Flashblock, Kaspersky and Malware, followed by a CCleaner should be enough to protect a normal user, but I am always making sure that everything is ship shape.

I've tried:

Norton
AVG
Avast
Avira
ZoneAlarm
BitDefender
Spyware Blaster

and a few others and I have to say I liked Avira better than all the other one's but it still had its fail moments.
I ran my scanners with Avira first, then Kaspersky after without removing them, and Avira cleaned up some stuff but failed to properly get it all.

That's my experiences sorry for the long post.

Kaspersky is nice, I had norton at one point which completely failed me, the computer would go to blue screen when turned on, idk if this has to do with a virus or not, and I have mcafee on another computer which seems to work fine too.

Fuck protection! If you get a virus, you can just reverse yourself to before you had the virus in safe mode. If it couldn't be fixed like that, I don't think a security program can do much.

Dirty please take that back. Thats like saying use satanic diarrhea and urine to flavour your drink.
Norton system hogs like a bitch and isn't very good at protecting you. If you pay for anti virus protection your wasting your money with the exception of Malwarebytes Pro.
