An Addition to the Admin Post Count Requirement
« on: July 14, 2012, 02:02:06 AM »
This is just a humble suggestion that I thought I should put out here for discussion. This admin application has sparked a significant amount of discussion regarding the 20-post rule which has been creating spammy posts from certain players that wish to apply.

Seeing as a post count can be raised in a very short amount of time, little effort is required. I move that we raise the requirement to at least 20 posts and require the applicant to have been registered on the forum for at least 30 days.

This ensures that the player has been involved in the community enough to be on the forums for a decent amount of time so they can't just come up out of nowhere and hope for admin when nobody knows them. The post count is to ensure they don't just lurk the whole time, and 30 days is certainly enough time to come up with 20 non-spammy posts. Even then, it isn't about that. It's about sticking around with the community enough to know whether you really want to be admin, and to make yourself known as a reasonable player who is worthy of the responsibility.

I'll leave you with a short story about my time in CG:

I've been around for a long time, over 2 years. At that time I was under the admin age requirement. It wasn't as simple as just popping in and applying, I really had to stick around for a while for it to even be worth considering. I do remember thinking that I'd like to become a part of the community, possibly an admin, which is funny because at this point I have significantly less interest. (Apart from beloved Jailbreak.) I feel like this helped me become a part of the community and at least a month of this would be good for potential applicants. (Technically I'm not even an admin anymore, the server I was triallmining on for a short amount of time, Jailbreak, shut down due to the terrible server providers completely unwilling to respond to tickets and whatnot. (I might be talking out of my butt here, I'm just spewing whatever it was I heard from Black. I dunno. :())

The point: I don't care if there /are/ active players who have the community's support for adminship, if these applicants haven't bothered to spend time on the forum, the hub of the community, getting to know players from /all/ of our servers, whether or not they're really dedicated enough to stick around and admin responsibly is beyond me. This would deter players who immediately show up and want admin, because they'd realize they'd have to wait at least a month.

Thoughts? This discussion needs opinions both to and against with proper reasoning, but let's try to keep it civil. Thanks!

I agree with something along these lines, but maybe with a shorter period like 15-20 days maybe. This in my opinion shows a more active member in the community rather than 20 posts which we all know if anyone applies with just 20 posts are deemed to be picked at for them so more like 40 at the moment but not listed :).

Yes, if there is a req for time on forum then they can't rush the post count.  They take their sweet time without the spam, and people actually have a chance to get to know them.

What if they make a profile, wait 1 month and then spam post (on one day)

I like the 30 days of dry-forum posting.

I encourage this proposal.

Then deny them for not being active for a month?

Possibly they then try to find an excuse. Maybe.

Maybe we can place the "Apply for adminship rules" on the register page?
Just a second idea.

What about the stats:
Code: [Select]
Total Time Spent Online: 24 hours
A minimum of 1 day spend on the forums?
Would be better if it's around 2 days.

Dear God, where do I see how many hours I've spent on the forums?

Go to your profile, then under your avatar picture; "show stats"

Yeah, but that can be idled pretty easily. Some people probably idle it without even thinking about it, too. Still a possibility, but I feel like if we tacked all 3 together we'd be moving towards too strict of a set of forum requirements.

I don't know if it can be idled. But I don't see people knowing how to find a way to idle it.
Either way.

Last time online,
Time online total
and
Post count

Would be indeed a better option.

In all honesty, I had no idea that stat even existed. Maybe it can, maybe it can't be idled. You'd probably have a better idea than I would.

What about only valid posts.
As in;
Posts from Spam box does not count.
