Admin Applications / Re: [ZM] Adolf's Admin Application
« on: July 28, 2014, 08:17:11 PM »
@Futeko

What exactly would that entail? Would I only need to change my name when using admin powers or whenever I join the server, even as a regular player?

Sorry for the slow reply (busy weekend)
This is a tricky topic because it's mostly about PR - what qualifies as "good for the image of the community" and "bad for the image" is highly subjective and difficult to define clearly.

As others pointed out, having an admin named "Adolf Hitler" is most probably bad PR and we're going to get flak because of that - regardless of whether people understand the satire nature of the whole act.

The issue is that even if you were to leave the server and join under another name to carry out admin matters, people are going to notice - whether by behaviour (you leave, someone joins back, someone gets kicked, the guy that joined left and you rejoin) or by looking up SteamIDs.

Now in my opinion, that itself is not an issue; just like you can wear whatever you want outside of work, you can behave however you want (within server rules) outside of your "admin work". Personally I would not have an issue if you'd carry out all admin-related things under another name - whether on the server or in the forums. I believe that would be highly inconvenient for you unfortunately, but if you're willing to do that, I'd see nothing in the way of my +1.

I do believe Adolf would be a good admin - he's a good player and a fair ZM - but as the others pointed out, that can only happen if you drop the whole "Adolf Hitler" act. I know it's neither racist nor childish - it's just satire and people should be able to understand that - but what is ok as a player might not be as an admin. People are jealous by nature and will look for anything they can complain about regarding your admin status and the way you handle it, and the Adolf act is just handing that to them on a silver platter. I thus believe it will cause more disruptions that solved issues.

So I'd give my +1 only if when playing as an admin you drop the Adolf act.

Ban Request / [ZM] empty DDOSing
« on: July 20, 2014, 10:10:46 AM »
Your name in-game: Futeko

Offender's name in-game: empty (though he took the name of other players when re-joining)

Date/Time of the offence: 20/07/2014 - around 14:00 CET

SteamID: STEAM_0:0:85325873

Server: Zombie Master (ZM)

Any administrators on the server?: Futeko

What was the problem/offense?: DDOsing - making the server crash as soon as he joins

Proof:
I can't record cases of DDOSing, but there are witnesses (Issac Clarke, RedDeath); it's actually Isaac that notified me of the issue. That guy was actually joining all the servers with players on and making them crash, one by one.
I'm guessing you can find the proofs in the logs of the server.

Other comments:
I could not catch him in time - the first time I noticed the behaviour, the second time (after the server restarted) I could not get to the ban command in time before the server crashed.
The last thing he did before leaving us alone was speedhacking on another server, as reported by Isaac Clarke.
I'd classify this ban request as urgent, because that guy can come back anytime and ruin all the servers again.

Thanks in advance for considering this request!

If Eagle doesn't come to explain this case, I'd vote to give Roland a second chance. Just make sure not to get in trouble again :3

Hey Roland,

The difference between someone that plays well and someone that "cheats" is indeed fuzzy and can lead to misinterpretations. A permaban for an "alleged hacker" sounds quite harsh to me (it's not like you were speedhacking).

Unfortunately I don't know Hidden well enough to form an opinion on the matter. I'd let Eagle explain why he thinks you were hacking.

Admin Applications / Re: [ZM] abdo_sayed admin app
« on: July 06, 2014, 01:27:19 PM »
I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced you have the required maturity to handle being an admin on such a sensitive game and server. As Ozborne pointed out, restless impatience is a glaring red light for such applications, because patience is a critical quality to have for a game admin - and unfortunately, that's not the only warning sign (Ozborne pointed out a few others). In that sense, I believe it's a little bit too soon to give you such a high responsibility on that server.

What I would advice you to do, is to demonstrate:
1) That you can be useful;
2) That you can take proper decisions.

So, when playing the game, if you encounter people you'd have taken action against, please gather evidence as explained in that thread and post it on the forums. It will help the community, show us whether you are indeed capable, and eventually provide us with the necessary materials to approve you.

Could you please set the variable "zm_banshee_limit" to 1 on the ZM server? It will limit the amount of spawnable banshees to 1 per player; there's been to many banshee spammers these days

If I'm not mistaken, those are bans coming from other servers. Do you know their admins? Do you know whether they're ban-happy and doesn't even try to look at the evidence or whether they're thorough? Did the guy ever pose any issues on our server?

Right now, on the one hand you have admins from other servers who banned him weeks ago about alleged RDMing, on the other hand you have players of the community that have actually played with the guy saying he'd be a good addition. By siding with the firsts you're basically saying people from outside the community are better at spotting trolls than our own players.

What I'm waiting for though, is the answer from the applicant to all this; if he doesn't show motivation to at least visit the forums, the whole point is moot anyway.

Let the guy speak for himself - if he did indeed wrong, he deserves a chance to explain himself.

In all cases, I value the opinion of people having actually played with the applicant more than blind logs. Hey, we have a regular player on ZM named "Adolf Hitler" with "jew cartoons" tags - but it's all satire, nobody cares and he's both an active and good player to game with. If your sole reason to put an application in the trash bin is because the guy once went with "****" in his name and was allegedly RDMing, all without looking further into the case or listening to the people who actually met him, I say you're being awfully expedient.

Zombie Master / Re: Punishing non-cooperative behaviours?
« on: May 06, 2014, 08:10:21 PM »
I wouldn't go as far as to say the majority of players do that - actually, "true selfish behaviour" I only encounter in maybe 10-15% of the players. But of course it depends on the people - some days the whole server plays together and everything is great, some days people would shoot eachother for ammo if they could. When I give those examples, I mostly have one person in mind, who is sometimes borderline griefing (blocking people so that they stay stuck in traps, playing with explosives to hurt people, etc.). It's just hard to determine what to do in those cases :<

Zombie Master / Re: Punishing non-cooperative behaviours?
« on: May 06, 2014, 01:34:18 PM »
That's my concern actually, because as you said, we can't go and punish every little thing; I'm much more lenient that strict, and if I have to act, it'll always be in tiny baby steps - because I believe people should learn to behave differently because they understand it's not ok rather than because they know they'll be punished otherwise.

The grey area here is that if we start penalizing players who work against others, it might be seen as too strict and subjective and kill the players' motivation. But on the other hand, when there's someone that consistently get others killed every other round because of his selfishness, it's also very annoying for the affected people. Waiting for the next round in ZM is already long enough, but if you get killed not because of the ZM, not because you messed up, but because a teammate decided he's better off without you, it just adds insult to injury.

That's what made me think about a way to discourage this type of behaviour, because it's toxic for the fun of the game. But the line is hard to draw, because it's such a fuzzy, subjective area. It's hard to determine whether there was intent of malice or if they just did not realize what they were doing. Moreover, it's hard to determine whether it was a case of "if I don't do this, I'll die, so I'll have to sacrifice the others" or "Meh, I don't care, they should have been faster".

In fact, it'd actually be better if we could reward cooperative play rather than penalize uncooperative play, but we don't really have the tools for that. Cooperative play is actually its own reward because it makes for a much better game experience, but not everyone sees that.

For instance, I have much more fun playing with a team that tries its best to play as a team rather than a herd of every-man-for-himself-ers - there's nothing more engaging than people doing their best to tear down the wall of zombies between you and the airlock so that you can get through. It's so much better when people actively wait for everyone to be inside an elevator before they push the button.

Until now, the only actions I'd take would be to always repeat the "good practice" teamplay rules, e.g. wait until everyone is in before pushing the button in an elevator, and I'd try to discourage repeat offenders by giving small slaps (e.g. 10 dmg) when it's obvious they just want to troll. I'm trying to rationalize the process, but it's far from being a simple matter.
