Computer Heatsink
« on: January 01, 2013, 07:14:32 AM »
Hello everyone I am looking for an aftermarket heatsink for my computer and I have a 100$ budget would prefer cheaper but don't want to cheaper out too much. Current issue stopping me from finding one is my mobo (asus p8z77-v lx) ram slots are close to the processor so a heatsink may cover a few ram slots since my ram is corsair vengeance ram with the tall heatsinks so yeah need some help here and thanks for replies or advice.

I had a similar issue since on my mobo the ram is really close to CPU. I had to go through a couple because the guy at store was like yeah this would fit perfect when it didn't. Im using a cool master one that cost me less than 50$ and haven't had any issues. Just check to see if there are any models that don't cover your ram =p.

For under $100, you can get a LOT of good coolers.  You want to run closed loop water cooling or air?

I was going to get an H100i from corsair but then I read all the bad reviews off amazon and newegg of how their system got fried since their was a cut in the tubing and I can't replace my system if something like that happens so I am just going for air cooling for now. Also cadaver I looked at the coolermaster 212 evo you linked and I am not certain that it will fit without blocking ram but it looks nice.

The ram blocking may be averted, as the 212 evo can be mounted 2 ways: vertical and horizontal ( | or _ ) on the motherboard.   This should prevent issues with your ram.

This link shows the size of the heatsink, and may allow you to see if it will fit.

I suggest a simple email question to Cooler Master, to see if you have space to place the Evo 212.

Alternative cooling, though I do not know its reputation, as the 212 Evo has a well known rep, is the GeminII S254

Designed to fit over the ram.

Also, look at the thermal right products: http://www.thermalright.com/index.html

Addendum:

Here is a video on how to install some other guy did.  Kinda boring, but you want install to be boring.  Look around approximately 14:30 in, and watch, as he shows it CAN be placed Vertical or Horizontal.

Well for one their compatible with different sockets.

And the fans a bit different. Looks like one of them has PWM for the fan and the other doesn't. If I recall PWM is a lot less loud.
