Help Section / I need to fix a motherboard...
« on: June 06, 2013, 11:41:04 PM »
Ok, I recently installed a new pair of speakers into an HP probook 4510s, but while I was reassembling everything, the plug into the monitor must have gotten loose or a pin damaged because the screen looked like it was running in 12-bit.

Whole thing booted alright, just visible streaks on the screen AFTER BIOS.

Now, I tried going back, and in the process, thinking it the plug in was too loose, I removed it, and plugged it back in. put it together, turned it on. Same damn thing.

It mustve been in pretty tight the first time, so what I instead did, is I went back and tried to apply a more forceful touch to get it all the way in ( It wasnt flush with the slot), and with the help of a screw driver, got it wedged between, and I scrapped against a piece next to it.

I though to myself
"shit, its bent.
Oh well,

I'll bend it back."

As I did that, the solder snaps, and the damn thing went flying! Its about the size of the soldering wire I was gonna use on it (.015") but I need to get a new whatever that was to avoid risking damaging this.

Here's my question:

What is that piece called? It looks like a resistor or something...
and
Is it fixable?

If there is anyway to Macgyver this as well, do tell.

DISCLAIMER: the warranty was plenty void before it was opened, its been for about 4-5 years.

Well, it appears that at this rate
the petition may reach its full 1 million Petitioners tonight.

Supposedly google is attempting to deny this service, and essentially shut it down due to its obvious Legal issues, but this may end up going much farther.

What do you guys think?

General Gaming Talk / Real Life! *the game*
« on: November 10, 2010, 12:46:53 PM »
This game in essence allows you to live out a life anywhere in the world without experiencing how sucky it is for yourself!

And boy oh boy, does life suck for you.

The game is called Real life 2010, and you start your life from birth in a random location hoping you don't get born into a poverty stricken country, like india, and get acute diahreea at the age of 3 like what happened to me... followed by death.

This game pretty much throws the worst of life at you, and when it does, you get to laugh at it.
You can download a free trial at the website.

Debate Forum / Console servers, worth it?
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:11:19 PM »
Lets face it, Microsoft has been raising its prices without any form of improvement that I have seen from this whole inflation, but could stand to learn a thing or two.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/8098-Experienced-Points-Whats-Wrong-with-Xbox-Live.2

Now If you read this man's article, he explains his own thoughts on how the natural pool of bile and run-off known as xbox trolls could be cleaned up by offering console servers. In the same sense as PC servers, he states that if there was a bigger sense of moderation on the xbox, it would'nt be populated by all those annoying players if people could shell out abit more in their subscription to gain admin powers to a specific server to pay for it.

He goes further into detail about positives and negatives of it, but what do you think CG? Would you like to see dedicated servers in the future? Possibly buy your own? Or would this seem to be a waste, as other people could pay to abuse?

The Art Forum / Ray Bradbury
« on: September 12, 2010, 03:11:21 PM »
This man is a respectable Science-Fiction writer and has been for quite some time.
Weather or not you know him, I have only recently been introduced to Bradbury's works.

This is his biography taken from his website;

------------------------------------------------
Ray Bradbury, American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and poet, was born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He graduated from a Los Angeles high school in 1938. Although his formal education ended there, he became a "student of life," selling newspapers on L.A. street corners from 1938 to 1942, spending his nights in the public library and his days at the typewriter. He became a full-time writer in 1943, and contributed numerous short stories to periodicals before publishing a collection of them, Dark Carnival, in 1947.

His reputation as a writer of courage and vision was established with the publication of The Martian Chronicles in 1950, which describes the first attempts of Earth people to conquer and colonize Mars, and the unintended consequences. Next came The Illustrated Man and then, in 1953, Fahrenheit 451, which many consider to be Bradbury's masterpiece, a scathing indictment of censorship set in a future world where the written word is forbidden. In an attempt to salvage their history and culture, a group of rebels memorize entire works of literature and philosophy as their books are burned by the totalitarian state. Other works include The October Country, Dandelion Wine, A Medicine for Melancholy, Something Wicked This Way Comes, I Sing the Body Electric!, Quicker Than the Eye, and Driving Blind. In all, Bradbury has published more than thirty books, close to 600 short stories, and numerous poems, essays, and plays. His short stories have appeared in more than 1,000 school curriculum "recommended reading" anthologies.

Ray Bradbury's work has been included in four Best American Short Story collections. He has been awarded the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America, the PEN Center USA West Lifetime Achievement Award, among others. In November 2000, the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters was conferred upon Mr. Bradbury at the 2000 National Book Awards Ceremony in New York City.

Ray Bradbury has never confined his vision to the purely literary. He has been nominated for an Academy Award (for his animated film Icarus Montgolfier Wright), and has won an Emmy Award (for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree). He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's Ray Bradbury Theater. He was the creative consultant on the United States Pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1982 he created the interior metaphors for the Spaceship Earth display at Epcot Center, Disney World, and later contributed to the conception of the Orbitron space ride at Euro-Disney, France.

Married since 1947, Mr. Bradbury and his wife Maggie lived in Los Angeles with their numerous cats. Together, they raised four daughters and had eight grandchildren. Sadly, Maggie passed away in November of 2003, please click here to learn more about Maggie.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday in August 2000, Bradbury said, "The great fun in my life has been getting up every morning and rushing to the typewriter because some new idea has hit me. The feeling I have every day is very much the same as it was when I was twelve. In any event, here I am, eighty years old, feeling no different, full of a great sense of joy, and glad for the long life that has been allowed me. I have good plans for the next ten or twenty years, and I hope you'll come along."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only two short stories I have read so far from him are "The Veldt" and " A sound of Thunder".

So, any thoughts and opinions on this guy? Ever read one of his stories? His website is right here http://www.raybradbury.com
