I honestly am too lost in all the updates. I used to follow them back in the alpha, and each one seemed significant as I got to watch the game grow before my eyes. Ever since about the time all the blaze rods, alchemy, enchanting stuff got added I just gave up trying to figure out how to play the game. I don't like trying to constantly scour the wiki trying to learn the game mechanics. Not that I don't think they should be adding depth to the game, I think a lot of the stuff like pistons are good additions, but a lot of it seems a bit overkill and really just burns me out of the game.

I guess I don't understand peoples' lust for tons of game mechanics. I don't really feel a lot of them belong in this kind of game. This is probably why Tekkit is such a nightmare to me. It's true that you can mod it, but not really worth my effort. Minecraft tends to shit all over me when I mod it anyway. Sometimes less is more in my opinion.

Updates simplified:

Anvils for repairing and combining
Mining ores, smelting, breeding animals and making potions(maybe) provides XP orbs.
Witches in swamps and they added Bats
Beacons for buffs like speed and improved defense
Carrots and Potatoes
Added Wither boss that drops nether star needed for beacons / Wither Skeletons in nether
Mobs can pick up weapons and armor
Animals have specific breeding foods instead of wheat now
Fireworks/Firework star
Enchanted Books for enchanting maybe shears, hoes or if you want to give aqua affinity to your pickaxe.
++ MANY MANY other small updates and fixes

Then in the next update they're adding nether Quartz, redstone blocks and a new kind of repeater and other things like the Hopper for further redstone complexity. Just play the game here and there and check it out, it's probably funner to play now than it ever was before; despite yall's dislike for new things. :p

I love how much they update their game, so much cool stuff to keep me interested. :D
This whole thing is a travesty.

Updates to the January3 snapshot ++ the two things that come with the newer snapshot

Death messages now show the weapon someone was killed with
Redstones circuits are more consistent and pistons should be more stable
    Added the Redstone Comparator
Has 2 inputs and 1 output
If A≥B, the output will be A, otherwise it will stay off - When the comparator is toggled, it will output full strength instead of A it will subtract B from A and need a comparator as input for B
        Replacement for the capacitor
Whichever side gives the bigger signal will be considered signal B
    Added the Daylight Sensor block
    Added a Hopper block
Places and takes out items in Hoppers, Chests, Furnaces, Chest Minecart, Dispensers, and Brewing Stands.
Allows for the automation of many processes
Still a work in progress (as indicated by the inventory icon).
Added a Trapped Chest that activates redstone
Gives out a signal depending on the amount of players looking inside. 1 person = 1 strength signal, 2 people = 2, etc.
Crafted with a Chest and a Tripwire Hook.
Large Trapped Chests can be staggered with Large Chests to allow more compact storage.
Texture is slightly different than a normal chest, with a red stain around the latch.
Added Weighted Pressure Plates that detects item stacks
Gold version reaches full strength at 60 items.
Iron version reaches full strength at 600 items.
Linear, so 10 strength signal means twice as many items as a 5 strength signal
    Added Block of Redstone
Stores redstone dust similar to blocks of diamond, etc.
        Emits constant redstone power
Works as pushable redstone power source
Added a new Nether Quartz Ore to the Nether
Drops 1 Nether Quartz item when mined
Generates around Netherrack in the Nether
Added a Nether Brick (item) for crafting Nether Brick blocks
        Obtained by smelting Netherrack
Crafting recipe is 2x2 Nether Bricks
    Inventory management changes
Double-click items to fill the stack up as much as possible
Drag item stacks around to divide them up over the dragged-over slots
Drag item stacks around with the right mouse button to place one of that stack in each dragged-over slot, if that slot is not occupied already
Shift double click an item stack to move all other item stacks of that kind to that part of the inventory
Press Q while the mouse is over an item in the inventory or a container to drop it
The texture for the Locked Chest block has been changed
Now shows the item name in game

++

You can now shift-click rails onto Hoppers to empty Chest Minecarts
All containers output a redstone signal when a Comparator is placed against it directly. The strength of it depends on how full the container is.[2]
This works with Trapped Chests as well, meaning it can provide two redstone signals with different causes at the same time.

Also; Nether Quartz Blocks. :D

Fuck yeah, time for more.

January 10

    Improved texture packs
Textures now use one file per block/item, which are stitched together at runtime - Texture sizes don't need to be consistent
Any block and item can be animated by putting the frames underneath each other in the right .png - Use an optional .txt to specify frame order and duration
Special rules apply for water, lava, compass and clock
Existing texture packs will "automagically" be converted
Vanilla textures will be used if texture files are missing
See the wiki's page on texture packs for more information
Improved Skeletons aim - Now shoot from 15 blocks away, instead of 10
Improved naming (using the anvil) of containers and mob eggs
Mobs spawned from renamed eggs have the name of the egg and the names will appear in the death message
Mobs can now display their custom name as nametag using an NBT tag
Renamed Chests, Trapped Chests, Dispensers, Furnaces, Brewing Stands, and Enchantment Tables will display the new name in their GUI where the normal name used to appear
Added and improved death messages - Now include the cause of death, the player the deceased player was fighting at time of death and the name of the item used to kill
        Player fell off a ladder
        Player fell off some vines
Player fell out of the water
Player fell from a high place
Player fell into a patch of fire
Player fell into a patch of cacti
Player got finished off by Player/Mob using Weapon
Player walked into a fire whilst fighting Player/Mob
Player was burnt to a crisp whilst fighting Player/Mob
Player tried to swim in lava while trying to escape Player/Mob
Player walked into a cactus while trying to escape Player/Mob
Player was slain by Player/Mob using Weapon
Player was killed trying to hurt Player/Mob
Trapped chests now give off the redstone signal through walls - Doesn't actually work
    Updated language files
Language files can now be updated via the background downloader (no need for a new Minecraft release)
Trapped Chest is now in Decoration Blocks in creative mode inventory
Added Block of Quartz, Chiseled Quartz Block, Pillar Quartz Block, Quartz Stairs, and Quartz Slab
    Added Activator Rail
        Used to trigger TNT Minecarts
Needs to be powered by redstone
Transmits power up to 8 activator rails far
Crafted the same way as normal rails except without a stick in the middle
    Added Minecart with TNT
        Triggered by Activator Rails
Crafting recipe is a TNT block on top of a minecart (allowing for creation in the 2x2 inventory)
When it derails, it explodes instantly, ignoring the usual timer delay
Explodes even more violently the faster it goes
In Creative mode when left clicked while moving, the Minecart with TNT explodes
    Improved the Redstone Comparator
        Updated texture
When fed by containers, they will now start giving out a signal as soon as 1 item is in the container, allowing for empty container detection
    Improved the Hopper
Is now controllable by redstone - Power it to disable item forwarding
        Added a proper icon
Is no longer considered wooden (can't be used as a fuel in a furnace, etc.)
New crafting recipe uses iron ingots rather than stone
The redstone signal emitted when a Comparator is placed against it directly has changed
1 item will give a signal strength of 1, a 1/3 of a stack (21 for items which stack to 64) gives a signal strength of 2
The number of full stacks x 3 = Signal strength
E.g. 2 stacks of an item/block will give a signal strength of 6, while 2 potions will also give a signal strength of 6 because a potion occupies one stack). 1/3 of a stack
    Removed the Smooth Stone slab.
Changed the chests in abandoned mineshafts to Minecart with Chest

January 11

Trapped Chests can now transmit signal downward through one block. This does not apply horizontally (through walls)[2]
Powering the hopper now also stops it from taking in items (see comparison between 13w02a and 13w02b[3])
Large/double chests can now release a redstone signal when connected to a Comparator depending on the amount of stacks within. Before, double chests would only emit a signal depending on how full each individual chest was (a double chest with only the the top half full would emit a full signal from the side that the items were in).
Changed the Activator Rail recipe - the new recipe includes two sticks and a redstone torch, as well as the 6 iron ingots. Dinnerbone stated this was previously a bug.[4]
This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

    Improved Quartz blocks
Pillar Quartz Blocks can now be placed in any orientation - placement works like with wooden logs
    Added a new Dropper block.

    Improved Minecart with TNT
When blown up using activator rails, they no longer destroy rails and supporting blocks
        Still blows up redstone materials
Creating a infinite water source no longer needs a block underneath, but has to have a water source block.
This means you won't ruin rivers/oceans with Buckets
Made skeletons significantly harder to melee and
        Scales to difficulty
They now shoot faster when their target is closer
They shoot players one block away
    Made zombies harder to shoot

This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

January24
Renamed command blocks now use their name instead of @ in the chat
Comparators can now be used with jukeboxes
Output signal strength relates to disk number
    Changed bone meal
No longer gives instant growth - instead, each use advances one growth stage. Crops now need seven bone meal, saplings need two
Brown and Red Mushrooms still grow instantly
Gives off green particles when used
Added a new command feature - scoreboard
        Not 100% done yet
The scoreboard can be used to track deaths, players killing another player, players killing something a mob, or players activating commands
The complicated system uses a combination of name, display name, and criteria, and track an integer number of points for players
Mobs now show their renamed name (using an anvil) above their head within a circular radius of 6 blocks, while looking directly at them
    Improved double slabs
43:8 will now be the "smooth stone full half-slab block" and will remain so
Generally: If the top bit is set, the top texture will be used on all sides, also allowing for smooth sandstone full half-slab blocks (43:9)
    Improved dispensers
Now equip players with armor from one block away.
        They now activate TNT
        They now use bonemeal
They now use flint and steel, decreasing durability of the tool
Dispensers and droppers can now face all directions
In Creative, you can now hit mobs/players from five blocks away
The original range only goes for Survival and Adventure mode
Mobs now won't walk over rails.
This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

NB4 lock; requesting a sticky for this.

Kay so the Redstone update is less than two weeks away! THE NEW UPDATE IS COMING GUYS. They've been spending a lot of time cracking down on bugs and other issues, and this update will be bringing us a lot of new redstone features. I'll post the update itself and a few snapshot additions they added recently for everyone who hasn't been keeping up.

THE REDSTONE UPDATE

General

    Rendering engine optimizations
Accelerated rendering, resulted in more frames per second.[5][6]
    Lighting engine optimizations
        Support for more realistic lighting.[7][8]
Lighting now interacts correctly with slabs and stairs.[9]
    New Texture Packs format
Textures now use one PNG file per block or item, which are stitched together at runtime, texture sizes don't need to be consistent
        Textures can be animated.
Animation frames are underneath each other in the same image.
Use a separate text file to specify frame order and duration.
Special rules apply for water, lava, compass, and clock.
Vanilla textures will be used if texture files are missing.
        Support for HD texture packs.[10]
        Support for HD fonts
    Added Minecraft Realms
        Currently a preview.
        A Mojang server provider.
Only added to few randomly chosen players.
Used on Menu Screen, when activated.

Gameplay

    Added Scoreboard system
Intended for map makers or server administrators.
            Good for PVP servers.
Used via /scoreboard command or command block.
The scoreboard can be used to track deaths, players killing another player, players killing a mob, or players activating commands.
The complicated system uses a combination of name, display name, and criteria, and track an integer number of points for players.
Have Team mechanics including custom name colors, friendly fire options and objective tracking per team instead of per player.
        Displays points below players nametags.
There is a SeeFriendlyInvisibles NBT tag for players
    Better Inventory management
Double click items to fill the stack up as much as possible.
Drag item stacks around to divide them up over the dragged-over slots.
Drag item stacks around with the right mouse button to place one of that stack in each dragged-over slot, if that slot is not occupied already.
⇧ Shift+ double click items in a crafting area to place all items in the inventory.
⇧ Shift+ double click an item stack to move all other item stacks of that kind to that part of the inventory.
Pressing Q while the mouse is over an item in the inventory or a container to drop it
Held armor can be equipped by right-clicking.
    Improved Death Messages
Now include the cause of death, the player the deceased player was fighting at time of death and name of the item used to kill.

Player tried to swim in lava while trying to escape Player or Mob
Player walked into a cactus while trying to escape Player or Mob
Player was slain by Player or Mob using Weapon
Player was killed trying to hurt Player or Mob
    Improved Renaming
        Improved renaming of Spawn Eggs
Mobs spawned from renamed eggs have the name of the egg and the names will appear in the death message.
Mobs can display their custom name as nametag using an NBT tag.
Mobs spawned from named Spawn Eggs display their name over their head when viewed within a 6 block radius.
        Improved renaming of Containers
Renamed Chests, Trapped Chests, Dispensers, Furnaces, Brewing Stands, and Enchantment Tables display the new name in their GUI.
Renamed Command Blocks use their name in the chat.
    Changed language files updating
Language files can now be updated via the background downloader.
No need for a new Minecraft release.
    Options & Title Screen
Moved Texture Packs button to options menu, instead of title screen.
New chat settings in Multiplayer Settings.
Smooth Lighting can now be changed to Minimum, Maximum & Off.
Minimum uses the old Smooth Lighting, and Maximum fixes a bug with stairs.
Scale, Focused Height, Unfocused Height and Width is now configurable.
    Improved Creative Mode
        All potions are categorized
In Creative mode, you can hit mobs or players from five blocks away
    New commands
        /testfor command
It tests for whether specified player is online (testfor [player]), or at specified coordinate and/or in radius (testfor @p[x,y,z], testfor @p[r=radius] or testfor @p[x,y,z,r=radius])
Signal output to any Redstone Comparators surrounding the command block like testing content of a chest
        /effect command
            Usage: /effect <player> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier]
            To remove effects: /effect <player> <effect> 0
Maximum number of seconds are 1,000,000
Amplifier increases level of the chosen status effect

Blocks & Items

    Added Redstone Comparator
Based on the idea of the Capacitor
The crafting recipe is 3 Redstone Torches, 1 Nether Quartz and 3 Stone
It is the same as a repeater, but with 2 inputs
If input A is stronger or equal to input B, it either repeats the signal or outputs the difference between A and B, so this can be used to make redstone contraptions like easier Piston Doors.
Output is toggleable by right clicking.
If input A is weaker than input B, then there is no output.
All containers output a redstone signal when a Redstone Comparator is placed against it directly. The strength of it depends on how full the container is and what disc number is used in Jukebox
This works with Trapped Chests as well, meaning it can provide two redstone signals with different causes at the same time
    Added Hopper
The crafting recipe is 5 iron ingots and 1 Chest
Places and takes out items in Hoppers, Chests, Furnaces, Minecart with Chests, Minecart with Hoppers, Dispensers, Droppers, and Brewing Stands
Allows for the automation of many processes collecting drops
Powering the Hopper now also stops it from [taking] in items EDIT: Releasing items [11]
The redstone signal emitted when a Comparator is placed against it directly
1 item will give a signal strength of 1, a third of a stack (21 for items which stack to 64) gives a signal strength of 2
The number of full stacks x 3 = Signal strength
    Added Dropper
The crafting recipe is 7 Cobblestones and 1 Redstone
Places items in containers in front of them, if there is no container it will dispense the item without using it
A dispenser 'shoots' items at you, while a dropper 'throws' items at you[12]
Can face all 6 directions, with a different texture when facing up or down
Need redstone signal to drop items
    Added Daylight Sensor
The crafting recipe is 3 Wooden Slabs, 3 Nether Quartz and 3 Glass blocks
Outputs a signal with a strength corresponding to the intensity of the sun
Will not work with torches, glowstone, ect. ONLY the sun.
Rain will affect the sensor's output.
    Added Trapped Chest
The crafting recipe is 1 Chest, and 1 Tripwire Hook
Gives out a signal depending on the amount of players looking inside
Large Trapped Chests can be staggered with Large Chests to allow more compact storage
Transmit signal downward through one block. This does not apply horizontally [13]
Texture is slightly different than a normal chest, with a red stain around the latch
    Added Weighted Pressure Plate
        Used to detect item drops
Gold(light) version reaches full strength at 60 items
Iron(heavy) version reaches full strength at 600 items
Linear, so 10 strength signal means twice as many items as a 5 strength signal
    Added Block of Redstone
The crafting recipe is 9 Redstones
        Stores 9 Redstone
        Emits constant redstone signal
Works as pushable redstone power source

Picked up when you break or smelt Nether Quartz Ore
Is a crafting ingredient for Daylight Sensors and Redstone Comparators
Can be crafted into decorative blocks.
    Added Nether Brick (item)
        Obtained by smelting Netherrack
    Improved Nether Brick
The crafting recipe is now 4 Nether Brick (item)
    Added Nether Quartz Ore
Drops 1 Nether Quartz item when mined
Can be smelted in a Furnace to obtain Nether Quartz
Can be legitimately obtained by Silk Touch enchantment
Drop more when picked up with Fortune enchantment
    Added Block of Quartz
The crafting recipe is 4 Nether Quartzes in a square
        Decorative block
    Added Quartz Slab
The crafting recipe is 3 Block of Quartz
Can be placed upside down same all other slabs
        Decorative block
    Added Quartz Stairs
The crafting recipe is 6 Block of Quartz in a usual stair recipe
Can be placed upside down same all other stairs
Updated to corner same all other stairs
    Added Chiseled Quartz Block
The crafting recipe is 2 Quartz Slabs
        Decorative block
    Added Pillar Quartz Block
The crafting recipe is 2 vertical Block of Quartz
        Decorative block
Pillar Quartz Blocks can be placed sideways, using the side of the block to place similar to sideways Wood
    Added Activator Rail
The crafting recipe is 2 sticks, 6 iron ingots and 1 redstone torch
Used to trigger Minecart with TNT
Used to stop item passing on Minecart with Hopper
Needs to be powered by redstone
Transmits redstone signal to 8 Activator Rails far
    Improved Detector Rail
Redstone Comparators powered by them now give out a signal depending on the fullness of the container on the rail
        Added activated detector rail texture
    Improved Minecart
    Added Minecart with TNT
The crafting recipe is 1 TNT and 1 Minecart
        Triggered by Activator Rails
Explodes even more violently the faster it goes
In Creative mode when left clicked while moving, the Minecart with TNT explodes
Doesn't destroy rails and supporting blocks
        Still blows up redstone materials
    Added Minecart with Hopper[14]
Crafting recipe is a hopper on top of a minecart
Can only be emptied by passing over a hopper
Can pick up items from containers when it passes over
    Added Minecart with Spawner entity[15]
        Only obtainable with world editors
Have only the entity not the item
Uses the same NBT format as a normal Spawner
    Retextured Lava
        Updated texture
    Improved Water
Creating an infinite water source no longer needs a block underneath, but has to have a water source block.
This means you won't ruin rivers or oceans with Buckets
    Nerfed Bone Meal
Now picks a random stage of growth each time as opposed to automatically pushing them to the final growth stage
Saplings take 2-4 bone meal to sprout into a tree
Gives off green particles when used
    Added and improved Double Slabs
43:8 is the "Smooth Stone Slab" and will remain so
43:9 is the "Smooth Sandstone Slab"
    Improved Dispenser
Now equip armor to players that are up to 1 block away
        Can place and activate TNT
Now use Bone Meal on a crop or sapling in front of them
Can create fire in front of them with Flint and Steel, which consumes durability
They can now face all 6 directions, and use a different texture when facing up or down
    Removed Locked Chest texture
Now uses the "Missing Texture" texture
    Fully implemented multiple snow heights
Drops one snowball for every layer of snow
Each level of snow has its own height collision
The topmost layer of snow does not have collision, so the player is always slightly sunken in the snow
Visually, four layers of snow is the same height as a slab. However, five layers of snow has the same collision height as a slab
Crafting recipe is 3 snow blocks in a row to create 6 snow layers
For each thin layer of snow crafted, the player loses exactly half the snowballs required to produce it
    Improved Beacon
        Increased range
            1 layer: 20 blocks (previously 16)
            2 layers: 30 blocks (previously 24)
            3 layers: 40 blocks (previously 32)
            4 layers: 50 blocks (previously 40)
    Stairs
        Improved lighting
        Stairs no longer prevent sprinting

Mobs

    New Skeleton Al
Now shoot from 16 blocks away, instead of 10
They now shoot faster when their target is closer
They shoot players one block away
    New Zombie Al
They now alert other Zombies within a radius when they see a player
They get more powerful as they lose health
When on fire, they can now set players on fire
Now become aggressive and come towards you when shot from farther away
    Improved all Mobs
Mobs no longer walk over rails unless they are pursuing the player
A way for mobs/entities to ride other mobs/entities using a NBT editor or Sethbling's MCEdit filter (Stack Entities). Can be found here
They no longer dismount upon reload
Mobs can now be spawned riding other mobs
Allows for a lot of customization, including "riding" bats by spawning a bat with a minecart on top, spider jockeys and other crazy combinations
Players riding stuff will keep it when logging off (When logging off in a minecart, you will take it with you)

World Generation

Added Nether Quartz Ore to the Nether
Nether Quartz Ore is found in the Nether, there is an average of roughly 69 ores per chunk
    Improved Abandoned Mineshaft item spawning
Now spawn items in Minecart with Chests, instead of Chests

RECENT SNAPSHOTS

Spoiler for Hidden:
March 4 -“ This snapshot spam will end soon, because we’re getting REALLY close now. We hope a pre-release will be out this week, but since we’ve had to bughunt for so long we need to push the official release until next week. „

Slime spawn rates now depend on the current moon phase
    Added activated detector rail texture

March 1-

All potions are now categorized in Creative Mode
Added a SeeFriendlyInvisibles NBT tag for players

            Exactly 100 players were chosen[5]
Feature is accessed through button in the Menu Screen

February 26

    Improved fonts
        Fonts are now changeable
        Added HD font support
Smooth Lighting can now be changed to Minimum, Maximum & Off
Minimum uses the old Smooth Lighting, and Maximum fixes a bug with stairs
Animated blocks and items in texture packs now require the animation definition
    Updated language files
A way for mobs/entities to ride other mobs/entities
They no longer dismount upon reload
Mobs can now be spawned riding other mobs
Allows for a lot of customization
An example is a "flying" minecart that can still be rideable by spawning a bat with a minecart on top
Players riding on an entity will keep it when logging off (the entity will disappear along with you) and will still be riding the entity upon logging back on

February 14

FallingSand can be edited on a NBT now. Compound "TileEntityData". You can change to other tile entity
    Slight optimizations to lighting

February 7

    Improved lighting.
        Some lighting optimizations
    Added Minecart with Spawner
NBT structure is 100% the same as with normal mob spawners
It is not an obtainable item, but instead can only be added as an entity with map editors or filters such as this.[10]

January 31

    Improved the scoreboard system
Added team mechanics including custom name colors, friendly fire options and objective tracking per team instead of per player
Added a new display type – Displays value below nametags
Added a new criteria type – health, ranging from 0 to 20
    Increased beacon range
Effects are infinite upwards with the beam.
        1 layer: 41 blocks diameter (previously 33)
        2 layers: 61 blocks (previously 49)
        3 layers: 81 blocks (previously 65)
        4 layers: 101 blocks (previously 81)
    Improved stairs
        Improved lighting
        Stairs no longer prevent sprinting
    Rebalanced bonemeal
Everything now usually takes 2-3 uses to fully grow, but it's random
    Fully implemented multiple snow heights
Drops one snowball for every layer of snow
Each level of snow has its own height collision
The topmost layer of snow does not have collision, so the player is always slightly sunken in the snow
Visually, four layers of snow is the same height as a slab. However, five layers of snow has the same collision height as a slab
Crafting recipe is 3 snow blocks in a row to create 6 snow layers
For each thin layer of snow crafted, the player loses exactly half the snowballs required to produce it
This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

New enchantments for Fishing Rods that can change your luck when fishing.
Lure - reduces wait time to catch an item.
Luck of the Sea - increases chance of getting treasure and decreases chance of getting junk.
    Achievements and statistics[5]
Now ties in with the scoreboard system - added 744 new objective criteria that were previously tracked with statistics and achievements
        Are now per world/server[6]
Achievements screen can now be zoomed in and out using the mouse wheel.
Achievements don't appear on the achievements screen if more than five achievements need to be achieved first (i.e. "DIAMONDS!" doesn't appear until "Getting Wood" is achieved).
Data for blocks, items, and mobs don't appear in their respective tab in the Statistics screen unless the player has crafted/placed/mined that block, crafted/used/depleted that item, or killed/was killed by that mob.
When a player earns an achievement it is now announced in chat. This can be turned off on servers by changing a line in the server.properties file.
Can be hovered over to show an achievement tooltip
Cannot be turned off in Singleplayer
    Scoreboard
Can now use statistics to create objectives; anything that statistics can track can be used as an objective (can also track achievements)
This is the reason why statistics/achievements were changed to be stored per world/server
    Commands
        /give
Can now give items to players with custom names, lore and enchantments [7]
Can give items with other custom NBT tags, such as SkullOwner to obtain the Head of a specific player, or even custom mob spawner traits, which removes the necessity to use an NBT editing program to obtain these items.
Will now print renamed items' name in chat and show tooltips when hovered over
Usage: /give <player> <ID> [quantity] [damage value] [dataTag]
        /time set day
Now sets the time to 1000 instead of 0
        /time set night
Now sets the time to 13000 instead of 12000
Custom NBT data can now be added via commands
            Works with /give and /summon
            Syntax examples:
                /give @p 1 1 0 {display:{Lore:["Hi,","How are you?"],Name:"Nice Stone Block"},ench:[{id:1,lvl:10}]}
                /summon Pig ~ ~ ~ {Saddle:1, CustomName:"Babe", CustomNameVisible:1}
                /give @p 397 1 3 {SkullOwner:MHF_Pig}
    NBT format
List tags no longer need to be named
No longer crashes when given the wrong type (integer/short)
    Chat system
"Useful to map makers, modders, players and server admins"
Added a way to do things when clicking things in chat, like executing a command
Other actions include opening a URL and showing an item tooltip when hovered on
"Saved screenshot as" messages can now be clicked to open the screenshot, takes you to the .minecraft folder
Names can now be clicked to PM people
Added /tellraw <player> <raw json message> to send chat messages with custom functionality to players - sender will not appear
        Syntax example: /tellraw @p {text:"Daytime? ",color:"green",extra:[{text:"Click here!",color:"blue",clickEvent:{action:"run_command",value:"/time set day"}},{text:" Nighttime? "},{text:"Click here!",color:"blue",clickEvent:{action:"run_command",value:"/time set night"}},{text:" Have fun!"}]}
    Fog
Removed the thin fog around the player
Fog is only at the edge of the visible chunks now
    Death Screen
If you die and you select the 'Title screen' button, a prompt will ask if you are sure you want to quit and give you the options to go to the title screen or respawn and continue playing
    Edge of the World
All blocks beyond X/Z 30 million (±30,000,000) from origin now act as solid blocks.
            This includes air blocks.
This creates essentially an invisible wall at the boundary.
As all blocks function as solid, if the player is moved outside the boundary via external tools, they will be unable to move outside the block space they are within.
Despite the above, the camera can still move normally. This reveals that ghost chunks still generate, as the camera can pass through normally solid blocks beyond the boundary.
    Block/Item IDs
Can now be referred to by their names instead of numbers.
Will be the only option in the future.
            Necessary for the Plugin API.
    Visuals
        Changed F3+B visuals
Block bounding boxes are now completely black instead of dark grey
The sky now darkens when inside.
    Nether Portal
Planned to have odd width to allow for design variations, and, if the one in the Nether is big enough, ghasts can go through them.
Portals can now be activated from any block within the portal, not just the bottom (when any fire block appears inside the frame)
New nether portal building rules: Any size from 4x5 to 23x23, but rectangular
    Enchanting
Unbreaking can now appear on any item without the use of an Anvil
Enchanted Books can now receive multiple enchants at once

Monsters that spawned at night can survive during the day
This is the first biome aside from Mushroom Island that naturally spawns with giant mushrooms
        Birch Forest
A forest made entirely of birch trees
        Flower Forest
Forest variant with several of the new flowers, including peonies, orange tulips, white tulips, oxeye daisies, rose bush and allium

        Mega Taiga
This is a very rare biome
            Contains 2x2 Spruce trees
Has a dirt block variant known as Podzol.
Currently obtained only by the silk touch enchantment.
Contains dirt blocks that do not allow grass to grow.
Moss Stone "boulders" are scattered around in this biome.
Dead bushes, mushrooms, and ferns spawn in this biome.
        Extreme Hills+
            Contains spruce trees
Goes considerably higher than the normal Extreme Hills
        Ice Plains Spikes

These ice spikes can reach y=120 from normal ground
Lakes of packed ice are dotted around the biome
        Deep Ocean
Is about ten blocks deeper than normal oceans, the maximum depth is in the low 30s
    Biome Variants/Technical Biomes
Over 20 variants for the biomes.
M - Biomes with an M variant are much rarer than any other variant.
Extreme Hills M, Taiga M, Roofed Forest M, JungleEdge M, Birch Forest Hills M, Cold Taiga M, Extreme Hills+ M, Savanna M, Savanna Plateau M, Swampland M, Jungle M, Mesa Plateau M and Mesa Plateau F M are more mountainous versions of their normal biome counterpart.
Desert M has patches of water unlike normal deserts
Birch Forest M has taller birch trees than usual
Savanna M has grassless dirt and mountains that can generate above the clouds and up to Y: 220 on rare occasions
Plateau - Biomes with a Plateau variant are like the hills technical biome, but flattened at the top
Savanna Plateau and Mesa Plateau are both plateaus
These are landforms which are raised by up to about 30 blocks and have flat tops
Mesa (Bryce) - A rare variant of the Mesa biome which works similar to ice spikes with tall clay spikes generating from the sandy mesa floor.
Hills - More technical hills biomes have been added to fit with the new biomes.
Birch Forest Hills, Cold Taiga Hills, and Mega Taiga Hills can now be generated.
Beach - New beaches separate certain biomes from oceans and rivers.
Stone Beach is composed mainly of Stone and often generates between an Extreme Hills biome and a body of water.
Cold Beach is composed of Sand with a layer of Snow on top.
Usually generates between a cold biome, such as Ice Plains, and a body of water.
    World type
        AMPLIFIED
Amplifies the terrain hugely, using the entire world height
Almost all biomes can generate huge mountains that can reach well above Y: 200
Extreme Hills biomes frequently reach the world height limit at Y: 256
Swampland and ocean biomes unaffected by this world type
Extremely resource intensive and requires powerful computer to run
Ravines here can reach down to bedrock
Contains numerous various landforms that are very rare or non-existent in default generation
Some examples include floating islands, overhangs, large water and lava falls and huge indents
Taiga biomes reach such altitudes that snow starts generating (about Y: 130)
This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

1.7.2 PART TWO
(The update wouldn't fit in a single forum post since there's a 200000 character limit or some shit)

Improvements & Changes

    Biomes
        Jungle
Melons can now be found in Jungle Biomes in patches similar to Pumpkins
Jungle biomes have been made much rarer
Has a Jungle Edge which has less foliage, but slowly leads into the main jungle
            Jungle trees now have branches
        Swampland
Grass is greener and fluctuates more in color, depending on biome temperature
In shallower parts, the coast is covered in staggered dirt block with lilypads between them
        Plains
Now spawns with three of the new flowers - azure bluets, oxeye daisies and sometimes tulips
Double tall grass also generates here
        Extreme Hills
Snow at high elevations of over y=95
Contain Stone and large dirt patches
            Gravel can replace ground cover
            Flat valleys near sea level
Can generate up to y=150, slightly above the clouds (previously y=124)
Has much more height variation and has flat parts as well, as opposed to the previous extreme hills which forced endless high peaks to generate
        Ocean[9][10][11]
Oceans are smaller and take up much less of the map[8]
Contain only gravel on the floor instead of sand, dirt, and gravel
        Gravel Beaches
            Appear more often
    Categorisation of Biomes
Four main categories based on temperature[8]
            Snow-covered, cold, medium, dry/warm
    Placement of Biomes
Biomes will attempt to avoid getting placed next to a biome that is too different to itself[8]
    Elevation of Biomes
Much greater variation of elevation in general
Most biomes can generate to y=100
Hills technical biomes have been made taller
    Modified the temperature system
Each biome has a base temperature that determines whether the biome is snow-covered, whether it rains or snows, or whether it rains at all
Biomes with a base temperature of 0.15 or less snow instead of rain
Biomes with a base temperature of 1.5 or greater don't rain[citation needed]
Biomes are grouped according to their temperature and attempt to generate next to biomes with similar temperatures
Temperature decreases by 0.05 every 30 blocks increase in altitude
Extreme Hills generate snow because of this at about y=95 as their ground base temperature is 0.2
